Half a Million Lancashire Voters Get Democracy Back After Election U-Turn

Lancashire voters will now be able to cast their ballots after the government abandoned plans to cancel local elections in May, following a legal challenge by Reform UK. Approximately half a million eligible voters in Lancashire across six councils: Preston, West Lancashire, Chorley, Hyndburn, Pendle and Blackburn with Darwen, will now have their say.

The decision to delay elections, backed by the Labour Party and Conservative Party, would have denied residents representation while they continued to pay council tax. Reform UK’s legal action forced the government to back down, marking a victory for democracy.

The U-turn has sparked calls for accountability. Steve Reed, the minister behind Labour’s cancelled elections plan, now faces demands to resign, with the reversal set to cost taxpayers £63 million to implement. The government’s 14th humiliating U-turn shows the scale of the political miscalculation.

Reform Cllr Simon Evans, Deputy Leader of Lancashire County Council, said:

"Reform is the only party in Britain standing up for normal people. Reform have beaten the government and forced them to allow the people to have their say in May 26. All local elections are now back on due to Reform’s legal action."

No taxation without representation. Thanks to Reform UK, Lancashire voters now get the democracy they deserve.
