At the Full Council meeting on 16 October 2025, Lancashire County Councillors voted to freeze their allowances, following a motion put forward by Councillor Ged Mirfin, Cabinet Member for Resources, HR and Property.
The motion was carried after a named vote, with 75 councillors in favour and three abstentions.
Councillor Stephen Atkinson, Leader of Lancashire County Council, said:
“We made the decision to vote against increasing our allowances, which will save the authority £92,000. We believe this is the right thing to do given the current economic climate, and with many residents facing extra financial pressure. We’re here to serve our community, and that means being careful with public money. Our focus is on delivering services that matter and ensuring that every pound we spend helps improve life for residents.”
This decision comes amid tight public finances and rising cost pressures for many local households, reflecting councillors’ intention to show restraint and prioritise spending on front-line services.
