Lancashire’s Champion for Older People, County Councillor Jan Schofield, recently attended a civic reception celebrating the volunteers and community groups who make a life-changing difference to older residents across the county.
CC Jan Schofield said
"I was proud to be invited to the event and to meet so many people giving their time to support others. Every volunteer I met brings warmth, dignity and compassion to older people’s lives. Their kindness strengthens our communities.”
Drawing on her background in emergency department nursing, she highlighted the importance of social connection as people age.
“Ageing affects us both physically and mentally. Community groups — whether exercise classes, crafts, or simply shared laughter — lift people’s spirits and give them purpose and a sense of belonging.”

The Champion’s Grant has already supported a range of projects, including St John’s Hospice’s expanded FAB (Fatigue, Anxiety and Breathlessness) programme, the Brindle Over 55s community sessions, West Lancashire Pensioners’ Christmas Lunch, and a special outing for unpaid carers organised by the Lunch and Laughter Group.
Chairman of Lancashire County Council, Alf Clempson, also praised the contribution of volunteers, saying:
“Lancashire is full of extraordinary people quietly doing extraordinary things. This evening recognised their generosity and impact.”
The appreciation was echoed by those attending. Carol Hardman, from the Nifty Fifty’s at Hub Banks Community Centre, said:
“Thank you for hosting such an informative evening. It meant a great deal to our members.”
