Cllr Ella Worthington and Cllr Matthew Salter were delighted to be invited to the official launch of Alternative FUTURES at Skelmersdale Library on Friday 5 June.
This extraordinary display is a powerful celebration of Skelmersdale’s past, present and future. Featuring more than 35 original architectural models, visitors can explore the bold vision that shaped the New Town and see familiar places from an entirely new perspective.
Many of the models on display have not been seen publicly for over 50 years, making this a rare and fascinating opportunity to reconnect with an important part of Skelmersdale’s history. Seeing these beautifully restored models return home was both inspiring and nostalgic, highlighting the ambition, creativity and community spirit that helped build the town we know today.

Made possible through support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Alternative FUTURES has uncovered, conserved and returned this nationally significant collection to the heart of the community. The exhibition forms part of a wider project led by Glassball Studio, celebrating 25 years of collaborative arts practice while exploring Skelmersdale’s rich architectural and cultural heritage.
Visitors can discover original town layouts, housing concepts and visionary designs that helped shape modern Skelmersdale, offering a unique glimpse into the ideas and aspirations behind the New Town’s development.
What makes Alternative FUTURES so special is the incredible collaboration behind it. Artists, local schools, students, residents, heritage specialists, Lancashire Archives, Lancashire Museums Service and community organisations have all played a role in bringing this remarkable collection back to Skelmersdale, creating an exhibition that is as much about people as it is about architecture.
Cllr Matthew Salter, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said:
“Alternative FUTURES is a fantastic exhibition and a brilliant example of partnership working. By bringing together artists, schools, students and local communities, it celebrates Skelmersdale’s heritage while inspiring future generations to engage with the town’s story.”
Cllr Ella Worthington, Cabinet Member for Civic Pride, said:
“This exhibition is something the whole community can be proud of. I would encourage everyone to visit and experience these incredible models for themselves. My thanks go to Glassball Studio, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and everyone involved whose passion, dedication and collaboration have made this remarkable project possible.”

A Must-See Exhibition
A huge congratulations to Glassball Studio and all those who have helped make Alternative FUTURES a reality. The exhibition not only showcases Skelmersdale’s unique heritage but also sparks exciting conversations about the town’s future and the opportunities ahead.
Whether you’re interested in local history, architecture, community stories or simply want to discover something new, this is an exhibition not to be missed.
